The OCR gate for your road traffic

Our TRENPEX RoadGate combines OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and OFD (Optical Feature Detection) to reliably and clearly recognize and identify features such as damage and graffiti, as well as the numbers of incoming and outgoing road vehicles—including trucks, tractors, and trailers with freight and containers.

Road vehicles are required to display a license plate from their country of registration. Our technology automatically recognizes all numbers regardless of the type and structure of the country-specific license plate, enabling all vehicles to be uniquely identified.

The TRENPEX RoadGate cameras on site take pictures of the vehicles. This raw data (frames) is then processed in the downstream image processing system (in the TRENPEX DataHub) to produce high-resolution images for each individual road vehicle. You can then view these images via the TRENPEX portal. Numerous details can be seen, such as damage or dirt (graffiti). As standard, you receive two high-resolution images of each road vehicle in side view: one image shows the vehicle in full height, the other shows the tires. One image shows the vehicle in full height, the other shows the tires. This allows you, for example, to immediately inspect the condition of the vehicle or identify container numbers.

The TRENPEX solution, with its IT infrastructure, is fundamentally designed in such a way that, if necessary, the view from the opposite side of the road and the view from above the road vehicle can also be integrated. These enhancements to improve recognition performance are always useful or necessary if the numbers on one side are damaged, if you want to check the correct labeling on both sides for hazardous goods transports, or, for example, to defend against claims for damages.

The TRENPEX RoadGate is located at the access road to an industrial company to seamlessly record freight traffic. The space-saving control box contains a camera system with high-quality sensors and works in conjunction with sophisticated OCR technology.

Installation

Space-saving and flexible

The installation does not interfere with the road surface, which is why no permit is required.

For the on-site connection, we only need a standard power supply with 110 or 230 volts.

The TRENPEX RoadGate requires only a small distance from the access road (60 cm) and can also be installed between adjacent lanes to seamlessly capture traffic.

If necessary, a control cabinet with integrated cameras can also be installed on both sides of the road. If you need a view from above of the open cargo area—for example, in the case of dump trucks or tipper trucks—to check the fill level of bulk materials (e.g., gravel or scrap metal), there is also the option of installing cameras above the road so that you can monitor passing vehicles from all angles.

Benefits

Camera system for seamless 24/7 detection of trucks and trailers

The camera hardware is positioned just outside the clearance profile and requires minimal space, allowing for flexible installation—even between adjacent access roads and control lanes (gate lanes). Thanks to its close proximity to the roadway, there are no temporary obstacles between the camera and the recorded trucks or containers, ensuring a clear and uninterrupted line of sight.

Vehicles of any length are fully captured as they pass through the system, with distortion-free imaging displayed in a single, continuous image. Integrated infrared lighting enables 24/7 operation, regardless of daylight or weather conditions, and eliminates the limitations normally associated with white lighting.

The high-resolution image capture ensures that even the smallest details and any potential damage to vehicles or containers are clearly visible. In addition, our proprietary OCR/OFD engines provide an automatic recognition rate of nearly 100% for all regulatory markings. The centralized post-processing performed by TRENPEX guarantees complete data extraction, including truck license plates, hazardous goods markings, BIC/ILU container codes, and ISO type codes.

Functions

TRENPEX RoadGate at a glance

Our OFD/OCR gate records the entire vehicle, including all information on speed, number of axles, total length, transit time, and direction of travel. You can see the breakdown of the entire vehicle into tractor unit, trailer, and container. We automatically perform plausibility checks on the recognized data for vehicle numbers, container numbers, and axle numbers.

Feature recognition with OFD, for example:

  • Container positions (position on the vehicle and distance from the tractor unit)
  • Placards
  • Graffiti
  • Position of the fold-down spigots on container wagons

Number recognition with OCR, for example:

  • license plate
  • Container numbers (BIC code)
  • ISO container types
  • Hazardous goods identifications: Hazard numbers (formerly Kemler) and UN numbers

Central data processing and data management takes place in the TRENPEX DataHub.

We provide you with high-resolution vehicle images and all vehicle information at any time and regardless of location via our user-friendly TRENPEX portal.

FAQ

The most important questions and answers about TRENPEX RoadGate

How quickly is the data available on the TRENPEX portal after passing through the TRENPEX RoadGate? Down arrow iconDown arrow icon to open the reply Up arrow iconUp arrow icon to close the reply

The data is usually available within 1 to 2 minutes. Once the measurement event is complete, the data is sent to the TRENPEX DataHub servers, where it is processed and then made available immediately. Data transfer now takes up most of the time. Processing on our servers, on the other hand, takes less than a minute.

If you want to open a barrier automatically, you can receive the recognized license plate numbers and container numbers directly from our TRENPEX RoadGate—even before the data is processed in the TRENPEX DataHub. This usually takes just a few seconds, so the barrier opens before the truck reaches it. Regardless of this, you will of course also receive all data, including high-resolution images, in the TRENPEX portal after processing on the TRENPEX DataHub servers.

How long does it take to install the TRENPEX RoadGate on the road? Is it necessary to close the road during installation? Down arrow iconDown arrow icon to open the reply Up arrow iconUp arrow icon to close the reply

After appropriate preparation, the actual installation and commissioning only takes about half a day. Our installation is usually carried out during ongoing operations without road closures.

Does the scale have to be in the same place as the TRENPEX RoadGate? Down arrow iconDown arrow icon to open the reply Up arrow iconUp arrow icon to close the reply

No. Technically speaking, you only need to ensure that the data from the scale matches the vehicle that is visually recorded by our system before or after weighing. You can choose the ideal installation location for both systems.

It is common for the weighing unit to be installed up to 50 meters in front of or behind the TRENPEX RoadGate. Of course, automatic weighing still works in both directions of travel.
